Charles Tanqueray began distilling in Bloomsbury in 1830, and the recipe he settled on has barely changed since. Where many modern gins pile in a dozen or more botanicals, Tanqueray uses only four — juniper, coriander, angelica root and liquorice — and relies on the precision of the distillation rather than the length of the ingredient list.
That restraint is exactly why it has remained a bartender’s benchmark for nearly two centuries. Juniper leads clearly and confidently, coriander adds a citrus-spice lift, and angelica and liquorice give the gin its dry backbone and weight. Bottled at a robust strength, it holds its character even when mixed — which is the whole point of a London Dry.

Did You Know?
📖 The original Bloomsbury distillery was destroyed in the Blitz. Almost everything was lost except one stubborn survivor — a copper still nicknamed “Old Tom”, which was salvaged and kept in service. Tanqueray’s four-botanical recipe has been produced in Scotland ever since.
🌟 Final Note: The gin other gins are measured against. If you only keep one bottle in the house, this is it.
