Cutty Sark was created in 1923 by London wine merchants Francis Berry and Hugh Rudd, who wanted something deliberately different from the heavy, dark Scotches of the day — a lighter, fresher blend that would appeal to wine drinkers and to the American market. Scottish artist James McBey designed the label over the same lunch, and named it after the famous tea clipper still on the bottle today.
Built mainly from Speyside malts and matured in American oak and ex-sherry casks, it is one of the few Scotches made without added caramel colouring, which is why the whisky in the glass is such a pale straw gold. The style is smooth, citrus-driven and undemanding — a whisky that works as happily in a tall glass with soda as it does neat.

Did You Know?
📖 The name comes from a 19th-century tea clipper, itself named after the short shirt worn by the witch Nannie in Robert Burns’ poem Tam o’ Shanter. During American Prohibition the whisky was smuggled into the United States by Captain Bill McCoy, who was known for never diluting his contraband — which is where the phrase “the real McCoy” is often said to come from. By 1961 Cutty Sark was the best-selling Scotch in America.
🌟 Final Note: Light, clean and endlessly mixable, with a hundred years of history behind the label. A litre of properly good everyday Scotch.
